Mick Cawston (1959 – 2006)
Mick Cawston was born in Dagenham, Essex in 1959 and in later years moved to Lynton, North Devon where he lived until his untimely death in 2006.
One of Mick’s favourite subjects was dogs, and he was known to be one of the finest dog painters. No matter what breed of dog he was painting, the character and likeness were always superb, and he created many humorous country scenes. His work is comparable with that of John Emms or Maude Earl, and he worked equally well in oils, water colours or pastels.
Mick was a finalist several times in the Fine Art Trade Guild survey for the top selling artist of the year, winning it in 1998 and being runner up shortly before he died. A major retrospective exhibition of his work was held in 2009 with the works being sold in an online auction. The prices achieved confirmed the strength of his following.
His work has been reproduced as limited-edition prints and greeting cards and continues to be admired and appreciated by collectors.
